If you've fought roof rats or squirrels in a DFW attic, you already know the pattern: you seal the hole, they open it again three feet over. Aluminum flashing and steel wool don't stop a determined rodent. Copper does, and that's the main reason we reach for it on exclusion work even when a cheaper metal would shed water just as well.
The Three Flashing Metals, Quickly
Aluminum. Cheap, light, easy to bend, doesn't rust. It's the default on production roofing, and for pure water management on a straightforward roof it's fine. It's also soft enough to be worked open by an animal with time and motive, and it corrodes on contact with masonry mortar and with copper.
Galvanized and stainless steel. Galvanized is inexpensive and lasts until the zinc coating wears through, then rusts – the same failure pattern we see on cheap chimney caps. Stainless is genuinely durable, holds up in our humidity, and resists chewing better than aluminum. It's a solid choice and costs less than copper.
Copper. The most expensive of the three, and the only one that solves the animal problem outright. It's also the most durable: copper flashing routinely outlasts the roof it's installed on, doesn't need coating, and won't corrode against masonry the way aluminum does.
Why Rodents Leave Copper Alone
Copper mesh is a standard rodent exclusion material in the pest control trade, and it works for two reasons at once.
First, it's a physical barrier. Woven copper mesh packed into a gap is dense and springy, and it doesn't compress into a chewable mat the way steel wool does.
Second, animals genuinely dislike it. Squirrels and rats avoid the texture and taste, and they generally give up rather than work through it. It isn't a magic force field – bad installation or thin, low-quality mesh will still fail – but packed correctly into a properly detailed opening, copper mesh holds where other materials don't.
The comparison that matters is copper mesh versus steel wool, and it isn't close. Steel wool rusts. In a Texas attic with humidity cycling through it, steel wool packed into a soffit gap turns into a rusty crumble within a couple of seasons, and then it's just insulation the animals push out of the way. Copper doesn't rust, so a copper mesh detail is still doing its job in year ten.
Where the Animals Actually Get In
Squirrels and roof rats are opportunists working the edges of the roof, not the field. The spots we find over and over on DFW homes:
- Roof-to-wall intersections, where a lower roof meets a second-story wall and the flashing was never properly stepped
- Soffit returns and the gap behind the fascia, especially where a gutter has pulled the fascia board loose
- Valleys, where debris packs in, holds moisture, softens the decking, and gives an animal something to work on
- Around the chimney, where the counterflashing has lifted out of the mortar joint
- Plumbing and exhaust penetrations, where the boot has cracked from UV
- Ridge vents, which a squirrel can peel back if the fasteners are underdriven
Copper flashing goes in at the intersections and copper mesh packs the gaps. The two work together – the metal handles the plane, the mesh handles the irregular voids the metal can't close.
Copper Where the Mortar Is
There's a second reason copper belongs on chimney and masonry work that has nothing to do with animals.
Mortar is alkaline, and aluminum corrodes on contact with it. Aluminum counterflashing set into a fresh mortar joint begins degrading from the day it goes in. Copper doesn't care. That's why copper has been the traditional chimney flashing material for well over a century, and why a copper counterflashing detail on a masonry chimney is still the correct answer.

The Galvanic Rule
Copper is the most noble of the common roofing metals, which means everything else corrodes when it touches copper with water in between.
Practically:
- Copper flashing needs copper or stainless fasteners. Galvanized nails through copper flashing will fail, and they'll stain.
- Don't drain copper flashing into an aluminum gutter. The runoff carries copper ions into the gutter and eats it from the inside. This is a common and expensive mistake. We cover it in more depth in our copper vs. aluminum gutters guide.
- Don't mix copper and galvanized steel anywhere in the same water path.
Pick a metal for the whole assembly and stay with it.

What We Recommend
For a straightforward roof with no animal history and no masonry contact, aluminum or stainless is a perfectly reasonable flashing and there's no need to spend copper money.
For chimney counterflashing, valleys on a house you're keeping, and anywhere you've had squirrels or roof rats before, copper is the material that ends the problem instead of postponing it. It costs more once. Exclusion work you have to redo every two years costs more than that.

Will squirrels chew through copper mesh?
Generally no. Squirrels and rats avoid the texture and taste of copper and typically give up rather than work through it. Quality and installation still matter – thin mesh loosely stuffed into a gap can fail regardless of material.
Is copper mesh better than steel wool for keeping rodents out?
Yes, and the reason is rust. Steel wool corrodes and crumbles within a couple of seasons in Texas humidity, at which point animals push straight through it. Copper doesn't rust and stays effective for years.
