When a Store-Bought Chimney Cap Won't Fit, You Need a Custom Size

This happens more than most homeowners expect. Big-box and online chimney caps come in a set of standard sizes. These three terms get mixed up a lot, so here's the plain-English version.

Flue cap (single-flue cap). This is the small cap that attaches directly to the flue pipe or clay flue tile itself. It sits right on top of the flue, keeps rain and animals out, and lets exhaust escape around the sides. It doesn't cover the rest of the chimney top.

Chase cover. A chase is the boxed-in structure (often wood-framed and covered in siding or stucco) that houses a prefab metal flue pipe. The chase cover is the metal panel that seals the entire top of that structure, with a hole for the flue pipe to pass through. If your chase cover has rusted or pulled loose, you need a custom chimney chase cap sized to your chase, not a flue cap.

Full-coverage cap. This sits over the entire masonry crown, not just the flue opening. It protects the crown itself from water damage and cracking while still capping the flue. For brick chimneys with a wide or damaged crown, this is often the better long-term option.

Why One Custom Multi-Flue Cap Beats Several Small Ones

If your chimney has two or three flues, you can technically install a separate cap on each one. In practice, that's usually the wrong move.

Small individual caps crowd together on a shared chimney top, which makes each one harder to seal properly around the base. Water finds the gaps. Wind can also cause smaller caps to rattle or work loose over time, especially in DFW's spring storms.

A custom multi flue chimney cap covers the whole top in one piece, with separate screened openings built in for each flue. You get one continuous seal against the crown, fewer seams for water to find, and a cleaner look overall. It's also easier to maintain, since it's one unit instead of two or three.

How We Measure (So You Don't Have To Guess)

Getting the size right matters more here than almost anywhere else on the house. A cap that's even an inch off won't seal against the crown, and a flue opening cut too tight will restrict airflow.

We measure a few things on every visit:

• Flue dimensions, taken outer-edge to outer-edge, for each individual flue on the chimney
• Crown dimensions, measured across the flattest points on opposite edges, for anything sitting on the crown itself
• Chase top dimensions, for homes with a framed chase instead of a masonry crown
• Overhang and clearance, so the finished cap flanges land at least an inch from the crown's edge and don't crack the masonry over time
