The spread is that wide because "whole house generator" covers a 13kW unit backing up a small house on one AC and a 26kW unit running a 4,000 square foot home with two AC units, a pool, and an EV charger. Those are different jobs.

The Short Answer

For most Collin County homes, a professionally installed whole house standby generator lands somewhere between $10,000 and $18,000 in 2026, all in.

Under $10,000 usually means a smaller unit, a short gas run, an easy electrical tie-in, or an essentials-only setup rather than true whole-home coverage. Above $18,000 usually means a large home with two AC units, a long gas or electrical run, a service panel upgrade rolled into the job, or a 26kW-plus unit.

National cost guides quote lower ranges than that – HomeGuide puts typical installed cost at $6,000 to $11,000. Those national averages pull in smaller units and markets with lower labor rates. Texas-specific guides run higher, closer to $13,000 to $20,000. Our range sits between the two because that is where real Collin County quotes land.

What You're Actually Paying For

A generator quote is five separate costs bundled into one number. Any contractor who won't break them out is hiding something.

The generator itself: roughly $3,500 to $9,000. This tracks almost directly with size. A 14kW to 18kW unit sits at the low end, 22kW to 24kW in the middle, 26kW and up at the top. This is also the piece that moved the most recently – Generac raised home standby prices 7 to 8 percent in spring 2025 and named tariffs as the reason. Steel, aluminum, and copper all posted double-digit producer price increases through 2025. Generator pricing has not come back down.

The automatic transfer switch: roughly $600 to $2,500 installed. This is the box that senses the outage and swaps your house from utility power to generator power without you doing anything. A 16-circuit essentials switch is cheap. A whole-home 200-amp service-rated switch costs more, and a home on 400-amp service needs either a 400-amp switch or two 200-amp switches, which is a real jump.

Installation labor: roughly $3,000 to $6,000. Setting the unit, running conduit, wiring the transfer switch, coordinating the gas connection, meeting the inspector. This is where a bad install gets expensive later, and where the cheapest bid usually earns its discount.

The pad: $150 to $1,000. A prefab composite pad is at the bottom of that range. Poured concrete is at the top. Most Collin County installs use a poured or precast pad because our clay soil moves.

Gas line work: $12 to $25 per foot beyond what's included. More on this below, because in Collin County this is the line item that surprises people.

Permits: $50 to $750 depending on the city. Your city needs an electrical permit, and if any gas line is run or upsized, a gas permit as well. Frisco, McKinney, Plano, and Allen each set their own fees. This should be in your quote, not a surprise invoice afterward.

The Gas Line Is the Wild Card

Most Collin County homes are on Atmos Energy natural gas, which is the ideal fuel for a standby generator. There is no tank to fill and nothing to haul in an ice storm – the unit runs as long as the gas keeps flowing.

The catch is capacity. Your existing gas line was sized for a furnace, a water heater, a range, and maybe a fireplace. A 22kW generator is a large new load on that system. Sizing it correctly means either running a dedicated line from the meter or, in some cases, having Atmos upsize the meter itself.

Most installers include a set distance – typically 20 feet – then charge per foot beyond that. If your gas meter sits on the opposite side of the house from where the generator needs to go, that run adds up fast. If the run has to be trenched under a driveway or a finished patio, faster still.

Homes in newer far-north developments outside Atmos service lines run propane instead. That works, but it means a tank, a pad for the tank, and a fuel delivery relationship. Budget for that separately.

What Drives the Number Up or Down

Home size and load, not square footage alone. A 3,000 square foot home with gas heat, a gas water heater, and one AC unit needs less generator than a 2,400 square foot all-electric home with two AC units. Two AC units. Extremely common in newer Frisco, Prosper, and Celina construction, and the single biggest driver of generator size in this market. Two condensers that can both call for cooling at once is a large surge load.

Distance from the meter and the panel. The generator has to reach both the gas supply and the electrical panel. A tight, clean run is cheap. A long run around the house is not.

Your existing panel. If your service panel is full, outdated, or undersized, that gets addressed as part of the job. A 200-amp service upgrade typically adds $1,300 to $5,000. On newer Collin County homes this is rarely an issue. On anything built before the mid-90s, it can be.

Roof, fence, and setback constraints. Generators have required clearances from windows, doors, vents, and property lines. A yard with limited placement options sometimes forces a longer run or a more involved install.

Load management instead of more generator. A smart management module or an AC soft starter lets a smaller unit cover a home that would otherwise need a larger one, by sequencing heavy loads so they never peak at the same time. A soft starter runs a few hundred dollars. Stepping up two generator sizes runs a few thousand. Sometimes the cheaper path is the smarter one.

The Tax Credit Question, Answered Straight

Homeowners ask about this constantly, so here is the honest answer.

There is no federal tax credit for a home standby generator, and there never has been. The residential energy credits – 25C and 25D – covered solar, battery storage, heat pumps, insulation, and similar equipment. Natural gas and propane generators were never on the list.

It got simpler than that in 2026. Both credits were terminated for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 under the tax law signed in July 2025. So there is no residential energy credit for new installations at all this year, generator or otherwise.

There is also no Texas property tax exemption for a residential backup generator. The state generator incentives that exist apply to utility-scale power plants and critical facilities, not houses. If someone selling you a generator claims a credit, a rebate, or a "government funded" program for a residential unit, ask them to put it in writing with the statute cited. They won't.

What About the Cheap Quote

If one bid comes in thousands under the others, one of these is usually true:

  • It's an essentials-only setup quoted as "whole house"
  • The gas line work isn't included, or is quoted at a distance that won't cover your actual run
  • The permit isn't included and you'll be handed that separately
  • The transfer switch is a smaller circuit-count unit than what a whole-home setup calls for
  • Nobody has been to the property yet, so it's a guess and it will be revised

The fix is simple: make every bidder show you the unit size, the transfer switch type and amperage, the gas run distance included, and confirm the permit is in the price. Once you can compare those four things, the quotes stop looking so different.
